Detailed Refit Process
The scope of work carried out by Chapman Yachting was extensive:
- Rigging and Structural Enhancements: All rigging, including standing and running rigging, was meticulously removed, serviced, and reinstalled. A through-hull bow thruster was installed to enhance maneuverability.
- Helm and Navigation Upgrades: A new helm with a wheel was installed, equipped with the latest electronics and navigation equipment, ensuring precise and efficient navigation.
- Deck and Accommodation Improvements: A hardtop was added over the aft deck, providing shelter and operational flexibility. The galley was altered for improved functionality, and bunk bed accommodation for up to 15 crew members was added.
- Engine and Power Systems Overhaul: The engine, generator, and running gear were overhauled. Four solar panels were installed to support sustainable energy needs, along with a Starlink satellite communication system for robust communication capabilities.
- Custom Fabrications and Hull Modifications: Custom fabricated tender cradles were installed, and new windows were fitted, enhancing visibility and aesthetics. The hull was repaired and repainted in Greenpeace green, featuring the iconic rainbow and dove motifs.
- Innovative Lifting Centerboard: The repair and installation of a lifting centreboard was a key feature, allowing Oceania to access shallow waters in rivers, reefs, and sensitive marine environments.
The entire refit project was completed within an impressive seven-week timeframe at The Boat Works in Gold Coast, Queensland, a testament to the efficiency and expertise of Chapman Yachting.

Greenpeace Oceania’s Inaugural Mission
Greenpeace’s newly refitted Oceania is set to embark on its inaugural mission to Broome, Western Australia, where it will support communities in their stand against Woodside’s Burrup Hub project, the largest proposed fossil fuel project in Australia. If approved, this project could emit over 6.1 billion tonnes of carbon emissions, significantly impacting the climate and marine environments.
David Ritter, CEO of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, emphasised the pivotal role of Oceania in their campaigns. The vessel will enhance Greenpeace’s ability to conduct at-sea activities over crucial ecological regions, including the Great Barrier Reef and the South Tasman Sea. Captain Daniel Rizzotti highlighted Oceania’s environmentally friendly refit, which minimises its footprint while maximising its impact on protecting the oceans.
